12 Free Things to Do in Florianópolis (2026)

Florianópolis' biggest draw is the free one: 42 beaches, every single one of them accessible without a ticket. Add free hikes, lagoon walks, a historic downtown and the iconic Hercílio Luz bridge at sunset and you have a week of island life at zero cost beyond food and transport.

Florianópolis (Floripa) is Santa Catarina's capital, an island city of 500,000 with 42 beaches, two freshwater lagoons and a compact historic centre. The central Floripa magic is that the best experiences — the beaches, the lagoon, the hikes — don't charge entry. Here are 12 real 2026 free picks.

Quick List

  • 1. Pick any of 42 beaches — all free.
  • 2. Lagoa da Conceição shore walk.
  • 3. Ponte Hercílio Luz pedestrian crossing at sunset.
  • 4. Centro Histórico + Largo da Alfândega walk.
  • 5. Mercado Público Floripa — free browse.
  • 6. Praia Mole sunset — the clifftop Morro das Pedras viewpoint.
  • 7. Ribeirão da Ilha — old fishing-village walk.
  • 8. Jurerê beach — free sand with backdrop of mansions.
  • 9. Lagoinha do Leste — free protected beach hike.
  • 10. Joaquina dunes walk — sandboarding rentals optional.
  • 11. Trindade coast walk + UFSC campus wander.
  • 12. Costa da Lagoa trail — lakeside hike to hidden village.

1. The 42 Beaches — All Free

Floripa's headline number: 42 beaches ring the island, every one public, every one free. Each has character — Jurerê (upscale), Praia Mole (surfer), Joaquina (dunes), Campeche (backpacker), Armação (fishing village), Lagoinha do Leste (protected hike-in), Matadeiro (rugged south), Ribeirão da Ilha (oyster bay). You can swap beaches daily for a week without repeating.

2. Lagoa da Conceição

The island's central freshwater lagoon. Walk the town shore, swim off the piers, rent a paddleboard if you want (R$ 60/hour, optional). At sunset the whole town congregates on the lagoon edge at Centrinho da Lagoa — bars, street musicians, food trucks. Wandering is free.

3. Ponte Hercílio Luz

Restored 1926 suspension bridge reopened to pedestrians in 2019. Walk across (free) for panoramic views of downtown and the mainland. Best at sunset or at night when it's lit. About 800 m each way.

4. Centro Histórico

Colonial-era downtown centred on Praça XV. Walk the Largo da Alfândega (19th-century customs house), the pastel houses of Rua Conselheiro Mafra, and the Catedral Metropolitana. A 90-minute free walk.

5. Mercado Público Floripa

Cast-iron 1899 market hall. Browsing is free. The box inside — Box 32 especially — sells oysters for R$ 2 each and draft beer for R$ 8. Doesn't count as free if you order; free if you just walk through. Either way, a Floripa icon.

6. Praia Mole Sunset

The surfer beach between Lagoa and Barra da Lagoa. Wide, dramatic, framed by green hills. The cliff at Morro das Pedras just south is a free viewpoint. Walk down the stairs to the sand, free as always.

7. Ribeirão da Ilha

Old fishing village on the island's southwest coast, colonial Azorean architecture, oyster farms in the bay. Walking the seafront is free. Oyster restaurants tempt — budget R$ 60 if you sit down, R$ 0 if you just walk.

8. Jurerê Beach

Upscale north-island beach known for its high-end beach clubs (which charge entry). The sand and sea, however, are completely free — walk down the public access points between the clubs. Sunset here faces west over the bay.

9. Lagoinha do Leste

Protected crescent beach in the south of the island, accessible only by a 1-hour hike from Pântano do Sul or a longer one from Matadeiro. The trail is free. The beach itself is often called the most beautiful in Floripa. Bring water, sunscreen, cash for the walk-back ice cream.

10. Joaquina Dunes

Giant sand dunes behind Joaquina beach. Walking and climbing them is free. Sandboard rentals at the base are R$ 20–30/hour if you want. Sunset on the dunes is a Floripa staple.

11. Trindade Coast Walk + UFSC Campus

The Federal University's lakeside campus is beautiful and free to walk. Combine with a stroll along nearby Córrego Grande Park and the Trindade seafront for a chill half-day.

12. Costa da Lagoa Trail

A 7 km walking trail around the west side of Lagoa da Conceição to the isolated fishing village of Costa da Lagoa (reachable only by boat or this trail). Free to hike. The village has seafood restaurants (not free) and a boat back to town (R$ 15).

💡 A rental car dramatically expands the free-beach game. Without a car you'll realistically do 4–5 beaches; with one you can cover 12–15 of the 42 in a week.
⚠️ Southern beaches (Matadeiro, Armação, Pântano do Sul) have strong currents — swim only where locals swim. Northern beaches (Jurerê, Canasvieiras) are calmer.
People also ask
Which Floripa beach is most family-friendly?+
Jurerê Internacional (calm water, shallow bay) and Daniela (sheltered, north) both win on calm shallows for small kids.
Are all Floripa beaches walkable without a car?+
Main ones yes (Centro, Lagoa, Canasvieiras via bus). Southern hike-in beaches (Lagoinha do Leste, Naufragados) are easier with a car.
Is Floripa cheaper than Rio?+
Marginally — mid-range hotels R$ 20–30 cheaper per night; food similar. The free-beach element makes Floripa feel much cheaper per day.
