Why Visit Iguaçu Falls?

There is a famous story that Eleanor Roosevelt, upon first seeing Iguaçu, could only say "Poor Niagara." With 275 individual waterfalls stretching 2.7km across the Brazil-Argentina border, Iguaçu is wider than Victoria Falls, taller than Niagara and louder than both combined.

The falls straddle two countries — Brazil and Argentina — and visiting both sides requires two full days. The Brazilian side is best for panoramic photos; the Argentine side gets you into and under the falls.

💡 Best time: Year-round, but most powerful November–March (rainy season). August–October offers comfortable temperatures and still-impressive flow.

Safety in Iguaçu Falls

⚠️ Stay on the paths: The walkways are slippery and currents in the water are lethal. Never leave marked paths — several visitors have died attempting to go off-trail.

Safest areas for visitors

  • Both national parks — Very safe inside — well-staffed and well-maintained
  • Foz do Iguaçu city — Normal city caution. Avoid the bus station area at night
  • Argentine side — Puerto Iguazú is a safe, small tourist town
📋 Practical: Wear waterproof shoes and bring a waterproof bag for the Macuco Safari. The falls spray reaches the walkways — everything within 50m gets wet.

Food & Drink

Must-try foods

  • Churrasco — Foz has excellent Brazilian steakhouses. All-you-can-eat rodízio from R$80.
  • Surubim grelhado — local Paraná River fish, grilled simply. Best local dish in Foz.
  • Empanadas (Argentine side) — baked or fried stuffed pastries, perfect for lunch.

Must-try drinks

  • Mate / Tereré — yerba mate herbal drink, cold (tereré) or hot (mate). The South American ritual.
  • Malbec — excellent Argentine red wine, much cheaper on the Argentine side.
  • Guaraná Antarctica — Brazil's national soft drink, perfect after the heat.
🍽️ Eat strategically: The park restaurant has an unbeatable location but is overpriced. Eat a proper meal in Foz and snack inside the park.

Day Trips

  • Both sides in two days — Day 1: Brazilian side (panoramic walkway, Macuco boat). Day 2: Argentine side (upper/lower catwalks).
  • Itaipu Dam — 45 min from Foz. World's second-largest dam. Guided tours daily.
  • Paraguay day trip — 30 min. Duty-free electronics, perfumes and alcohol.
