1. Ibirapuera Park

Paulistanos' backyard. 1.58 km² of park with joggers, cyclists, birders, a central lake, pavilions designed by Oscar Niemeyer, a free bandstand stage, and weekend t'ai chi groups. The MAM (Modern Art Museum) and Afro Brasil museum are inside (both paid). Entry to the park itself is free, 5am–midnight.

2. Avenida Paulista Sunday

Every Sunday 9am–4pm, the 3 km central spine of the city closes to cars. It fills with cyclists, dog-walkers, street musicians, skateboarders and coffee pop-ups. Walk the full length in ~90 minutes. Paulistanos treat this as the weekend ritual. Entirely free.

3. Beco do Batman, Vila Madalena

A narrow pedestrian alley in Vila Madalena entirely covered in street art by São Paulo's legendary grafiteiros (Kobra, Nunca, Os Gêmeos and rotating guest artists). Public space, always accessible. Best photographed between 10am and 3pm before the walls go into shadow. Adjacent streets continue the art for several blocks.

4. MASP — Free on Tuesdays

The 1968 Lina Bo Bardi glass-floating concrete building houses Latin America's best pre-modern European collection and rotating special exhibitions. Normally R$ 75; Tuesdays free. Arrive early — lines form by 10am opening and can hit 40 minutes wait by noon.

5. SESC Pompéia Rooftop

Lina Bo Bardi's other São Paulo masterpiece — a converted factory turned cultural + sports centre. The rooftop and common spaces are free to wander. Workshops, exhibitions and concerts are often free or near-free. One of the most acclaimed modernist buildings on Earth and almost no tourist knows it's free.

6. Mercado Municipal Ground Floor

The historic central market — stained-glass, high ceilings, stalls selling everything from truffles to wagyu to Brazilian cheeses. Free to wander; the famous mortadella sandwich upstairs at Hocca Bar is R$ 70–90 (worth it but not free).

7. Vila Madalena Street Art Walk

Beyond Beco do Batman, the whole Vila Madalena neighbourhood is an outdoor gallery. Rua Harmonia, Rua Girassol, Rua Mourato Coelho, Rua Aspicuelta — all covered in murals. Start at Beco do Batman, wander the 6 surrounding streets, stop for a R$ 18 draft at any boteco.

8. Parque Villa-Lobos

The west-side 73-hectare park. Less crowded than Ibirapuera, great for cycling, outdoor concerts on weekends and the city's only free outdoor climbing wall. Free, open sunrise to sunset.

9. Mirante do Sumaré

Hill in the western neighbourhoods with a panoramic view of the entire SP skyline. Free to access by walk or Uber. Best at sunset. Food trucks park up on weekends. A genuinely underrated free experience.

10. Pateo do Collegio

The exact spot where Jesuit priests founded São Paulo in 1554. Reconstructed colonial chapel and square — free to visit. Small museum inside charges R$ 15 but the square is free.

11. Sala São Paulo Exterior

A 1926 grand train station converted into one of the best-rated concert halls in the world. Exterior and lobby are free; concert tickets start around R$ 20 for OSESP rehearsals. Located in Luz — visit in daylight hours only.

12. Liberdade Sunday Market

Japantown (São Paulo has the largest Japanese diaspora outside Japan) holds a Sunday open-air market in Praça da Liberdade with Japanese and Korean street food stalls, plants, crafts. Browsing is free; food is R$ 15–30.

13. Pinacoteca Free Saturdays

The oldest museum in São Paulo. Free entry every Saturday. Strong Brazilian-art collection plus rotating international exhibitions. Located near Luz station — daytime only.

14. Instituto Moreira Salles Paulista

A contemporary photography and music institution on Avenida Paulista. Always free. Strong rotating exhibitions; the building itself is architecturally striking.

15. Farol Santander Skyline (Free with App)

The 35-floor Farol Santander building offers a skyline viewing deck with ticket. But their app occasionally hosts free-entry Fridays. Otherwise, walk Avenida Paulista or Mirante do Sumaré for a free panorama.

💡 Avenida Paulista Sunday morning → MASP Tuesday → SESC Pompéia visit → evening Beco do Batman + Vila Mad bars — covers the headline SP free experiences in 2 days.
⚠️ Luz, Santa Cecília and República late evening: avoid valuables, pack light, stick to daytime. Paulista, Vila Madalena, Jardins, Pinheiros are evening-safe.
