Overview of Brazilian Festivals

Brazil's festival calendar is extraordinary — driven by its mix of African, Indigenous, European and contemporary influences. The biggest are internationally famous (Carnival), but many of the most extraordinary are regional and largely unknown outside Brazil. Planning a trip around a festival can transform a good trip into an unforgettable one.

Carnival 2026

Dates: February 13–18, 2026. Ash Wednesday February 18.

Rio de Janeiro: Grupo Especial samba school parades at the Sambódromo — February 15–16. Street blocos across the city from February 10–22. Book accommodation 6–12 months ahead. Average prices triple during Carnival week.

Salvador (Bahia): The world's largest street carnival — 2+ million people. February 12–18. Main routes: Barra-Ondina and Campo Grande. Requires purchasing an abadá (bloco T-shirt) to access the roped areas alongside the trios elétricos sound trucks.

Florianópolis: Smaller but excellent street Carnival with a distinctive Azorean-Brazilian flavor. Relaxed, affordable, great for families.

Festa Junina (June Festivals)

Dates: Throughout June, peaking June 13 (Festa de Santo Antônio), June 24 (Festa de São João — the biggest) and June 29 (Festa de São Pedro).

Festa Junina is Brazil's harvest festival — a celebration of rural Northeastern culture with forró music, quadrilha folk dancing, corn-based foods, bonfires and elaborate costumes. The best celebrations are in Campina Grande (Paraíba) — known as the Maior São João do Mundo (World's Biggest) — and Caruaru (Pernambuco). Even in Rio and São Paulo, neighborhood Festas Juninas are excellent local experiences.

Parintins Folklore Festival

Dates: Last weekend of June (June 26–28 in 2026). Location: Parintins, Amazonas state.

One of the most extraordinary festivals in South America, Parintins is a two-team competition (Boi Caprichoso vs Boi Garantido) performed in a 35,000-seat stadium in a city accessible only by boat or plane in the middle of the Amazon. The spectacle combines Indigenous Amazon mythology, Portuguese colonial traditions and contemporary performance art. Logistically challenging to reach but utterly unlike anything else on Earth.

Círio de Nazaré

Date: Second Sunday of October (October 11, 2026). Location: Belém, Pará.

The largest Catholic procession in the world, with 2+ million people following the statue of Our Lady of Nazareth through Belém's streets. A profound religious and cultural event that reveals a completely different side of Brazil — specifically Amazonian and Northeastern Brazilian spirituality. Accommodation in Belém books out months ahead.

Regional Festivals Worth Planning For

  • Bumba Meu Boi — São Luís, Maranhão (June–August). Afro-Indigenous folklore festival; the Maranhão version is UNESCO-recognized.
  • Carnaval de Recife and Olinda — Pernambuco (February). Olinda's historical center provides a magical backdrop. Frevo music and giant puppet (boneco gigante) processions.
  • Oktoberfest Blumenau — Santa Catarina (October). The world's third-largest Oktoberfest after Munich and Kitchener. German-Brazilian beer halls, traditional dress and folk music.
  • Festival de Jazz de Búzios — Rio state (July). Intimate open-air jazz festival in one of Brazil's most beautiful beach towns.
