Which ATMs Accept Foreign Cards

Not all Brazilian ATMs accept international cards. The most reliable options are:

  • Bradesco — the most reliable for foreign Visa and Mastercard
  • Banco24Horas — network of ATMs in shopping centers, airports and convenience stores. Widely accepts international cards.
  • HSBC/Banco Safra — good acceptance
  • Citibank ATMs — excellent for Citi cardholders specifically
  • Avoid: Caixa Econômica Federal and Banco do Brasil ATMs often reject foreign cards

Withdrawal Limits

Brazilian ATMs have maximum withdrawal limits per transaction and per day. Typical limits: R$500–1,000 per transaction at most ATMs. Banco24Horas ATMs sometimes allow up to R$1,000–2,500. If you need more cash, do multiple withdrawals (and consider the fees involved).

Fees to Expect

The Banco24Horas network charges a flat fee of approximately R$12–20 per withdrawal for international cards, regardless of the amount. This is charged by the ATM operator (not your home bank). Add to this any fees from your home bank (use Wise or Charles Schwab to eliminate these). Total cost per R$500 withdrawal on a bad setup: $10–15. On Wise: $1–3.

ATM Safety

  • Use ATMs inside bank branches, shopping malls or at airports — not standalone street machines
  • Shield the keypad with your hand when entering your PIN
  • Be aware of who is around you — move away if anyone stands too close
  • Count your money inside the ATM area before leaving
  • Do not use ATMs at night in unfamiliar areas
  • The "good samaritan" scam is common — someone offers to "help" you with the ATM. Always decline.

Best Strategy

Minimize ATM use by using your Wise or Revolut card for purchases wherever possible (cards are widely accepted in Brazil, even for small amounts via contactless). Withdraw a useful amount (R$500–1,000) once or twice per week rather than small daily withdrawals. Use Banco24Horas machines in shopping malls during business hours for maximum safety and reliability.
